There is a fun book about cryptography, it is not all about computes but it is called codes. It is a great read.

about theory: I think the best way to learn theory is to also learn history: start at simple transposition and monoalphabetic substitution ciphers, then go all the way to modern encryption. writing encryption/decryption software is not hard when you know both theory and programming. cracking is difficult as you need to know a lot about cryptanalysis and a lot of math. also, using encryption everyday doesn't require more than a basic theory and good software (TrueCrypt and PGP should be enough)

Exactly, thats what the book I suggest does.

I tried cain n abel to crack md5 hashes but never got a single.. how it can work? i used brute force technique.

RE: Learning Encryption - unknownAttacker - 10-21-2012

bruteforce will work... sooner or later, as it tries every possible combination. to speed up the process you can download (or build, if you have time) rainbow tables

RE: Learning Encryption - chmod - 10-21-2012

Never used cain n abel as I'm not a windows user but brute forcing a strong hash could take a couple of lifetimes to be honest if the password is 16 chars forget it lol there are some distrobuted cracking softwares out there, which each user uses a portion of his/her hardware to crack hashes on a server.

RE: Learning Encryption - unknownAttacker - 10-22-2012

md5 is not that strong, but distributed is a good idea anyway

OK, what is the book? I mean the name?
