I think they are trying to use this kid as an example so that other kid will stop sexting each other. They are obviously blowing this way out of proportion because they are both underage. In this situation there is really no good solution that could come out from it.

The boy should have some jail time, but not be put onto the sex offender list, not even momentarily. From that, he will learn. You learn from your mistakes. Putting people in jail doesn't make them necessarily learn anything.
If I was someone who is in jail right this moment, I would try and figure out what I did wrong, and go back and do it again. It's human nature, criminals do it too, we don't learn unless we get hurt physically or emotionally to such a degree that we won't do such actions again. I'm not saying he is a criminal, what I'm saying is, this won't teach him anything. This is just putting him through torture thinking it will teach him a lesson. And you people may not see it as torture, but think about it. He just got his entire life ruined by the police, for something millions of people have done.
Now I can't say everything about what is right, wrong, etc. because I've never sent anyone a picture of me in the nude, not even shirtless. So that's all I have to say about the topic.
Unfortunately, that isn't an option. If you're imprisoned for a sex-related offence in the USA, you're put into the registry automatically.
....what? If prison isn't that bad, then why is it even a problem if he goes into it?

Why would he have to be an adult to go to prison? Regardless, it is very possible he is being tried as an adult.

I don't feel like the teens did anything so wrong that it required police involvement. I agree that the police are waaaay out of line for wanting to take a picture of an under-aged teen's dick, to match it to the one in the video, so they can proceed to ruin his life by adding him to the sex offender registry... But what are they supposed to do now this has gone so public? I mostly blame the mother of the girl. She could have stopped it right at the beginning by just having a 3 minute awkward conversation with the teens...
