Well at this rate of rapid growth within the games industry, especially within online stores such as the Google Play Store and so on, and how basic some of the games are, I honestly wouldn't really believe that it is quite possible that consoles will die as a concept.

My belief however is that consoles will always remain, if not purely for aesthetic purposes, The idea behind console games is that the whole experience it creates is more an atmospheric thing than anything else, it is a way for people to unwind and play games on the big screen and so on, however judging how technology is actually progressing, this is wholly a relaxing and completely relaxing exercise, in which I honestly don't believe that anyone will ever want to leave, especially with how the games and so on are progressing also, with the birth of new graphics engines and new technology that support more powerful and more detailed graphic templates etc.

All the same it could be a possibility, that these devices could become redundant, as perhaps maybe a total immersion device for playing games could come out.

On a final note I will say this, I am looking forward to the future and whatever technology as regards to gaming and games that it will bring.

They'll be taken over by computers... Not phones

PC will always be master race. However, this video makes a good point. I have the Galaxy Note 3, which if I'm not mistaken is in the top 3 fastest phones on the market right now. It has insane processing power and is literally just as fast as my computer is spec wise. As everyone else has said, this will definitely get bigger, but this will never top off consoles. Something about the handheld controller, memorizing buttons/controls and what not ONE time already makes it look way more appealing. Also, consoles are bigger - therefore they can fit much more powerful pieces of equipment into them. Saying all of this, I do believe that cell phones will eventually take over the handheld gaming market such as the Nintendo DS. Companies will just start making apps instead of DS games and will probably make more sales that way. As the technology gets better and people can start to afford more powerful phones, this will definitely skyrocket.

Phone gaming will never be superior. Sure, it's fun to play a game like Flappy Bird or Temple Run occasionally when you're sitting on the bus or something. No one will sit at home and play games on their phone for hours. It'd be uncomfortable to hold, and I'd imagine it'd hurt your neck too. With phones sizes, they could never compete with consoles/pc. Sure, technology is evolving which can make phone gaming better, but it's also improving consoles and PC. There's no way phone gaming will ever be superior.

Technically, you could say that the Nintendo DS was going to take over consoles - It's kinda the same idea as cell phones, but more dedicated towards gaming. Like I previously said. I think the only way this could possibly happen, is if some how they could fit more powerful processors and GPU's into phones. Sadly, It's not possible - at least not nearly as possible as it is for consoles.

In fact, a few months back, I have heard a news about Nintendo is going to put gaming into the next level. Nintendo is going to support some games on the mobile devices. I don't know whether it is true or not I think it is going to happen eventually. I do see that some people tend to prefer playing games on their smartphone nowadays.

I wouldn't reckon that will work out too well.
