Really good post, OP. I also recommend installing Facebook registration and login. That will TREMENDOUSLY help out with getting new members and the like.

Considering that I've owned my own forum, been an admin, as well as mod, this helped me out tremendously. All my sites usually shut down or the owners quit. (When I was admin.)
When I was left on my own, I couldn't advertise that well.
