Thanks for replying though. On the contrary, computer science has everything to do with offensive security. You need to understand basic programming, and then data structures, before you can do an sqli or create a buffer overflow. (Or at least you should). Going further, you need to understand network architecture to craft Chernobyl packets, software design to recognize an unsanitized input, and security models to successfully bypass DEP. Tl;dr, hacking is just abusing computer science. RE: College - Jay - 10-30-2013 Most community colleges like the one I'm attending currently provide majors and courses in Computer IT, Network Security, etc. Just contact local colleges directly and ask them in detail for all the courses you're inquiring about and they are required by law to search up the information for you and provide you with it. I did this for my college as I'm looking to major in Pharmaceuticals and Pediatrics, currently a Pre-med. Basic programming can be learned on one's own with guides or through various different IT courses. They don't need computer science to know that. Data structures I'll give you. Network Architecture can be learned through Network Administration. Software design once again can be learned on one's own or through many other IT courses. Not specifically just Computer science. I find your comment about Hacking is just abusing Computer Science to be only partially right. However. You can take as many courses as you want in Computer science, but they aren't going to teach you how to abuse everything they teach you, or teach you how it can be used in Offensive security, or anything like that. All it will teach you are a few things that Offensive security pen tester's use. Not how to be an Ethical hacker or how to become a Penetration tester, or any of the core knowledge the Security Information Field teaches. So, I don't know what the local colleges around here are. lol RE: College - w00t - 10-30-2013 You don't get a degree in those fields, you get a degree in computer science, with a concentration on something specific( firewalls, exploits, etc ) RE: College - Oni - 10-30-2013 (10-30-2013, 10:48 PM)w00t Wrote: You don't get a degree in those fields, you get a degree in computer science, with a concentration on something specific( firewalls, exploits, etc ) Some universities offer electives for things like information assurance, etc... You can pick which electives you want and go from there. There are a fair amount that offer security related courses, although the value of those courses is sometimes debatable. RE: College - Black Haze - 10-30-2013 I see. Well. I don't mind getting certifications in those fields. I'm all for it. However, my question is. Do you have no choice but to pay out of pocket to pay for the courses to get the certifications in those fields. RE: College - w00t - 10-30-2013 For the certifications, you have to pay out of pocket 90% of the time. Some universities will cover the cost. RE: College - Black Haze - 10-31-2013 I see. Damn. They are expensive. This sucks. =\ I have ADD, and I feel that if I went to college for something like Computer Science or Network Administration. I would become bored and lazy and wind up failing. If it's something you're legitimately interested in, something pathetic like ADD shouldn't hold you back. RE: College - Black Haze - 10-31-2013 I'm legitimately interested in the Offensive security field. Things like Computer science and Network Administration bore me. |
