It's no different to purchasing a laptop, but I cannot replace a faulty SSD or Ram. Why take It In for repair, when I can do It myself on a device that I paid for and rightfully own.

In terms of a cell phone, I've purchased It and It's registered under my name when connected to a given carrier, hence I'm responsible for both the device and Its usage. Essentially, I own It and If I wish to repair It and not take It to an authorized dealer, then that's entirely my choice. If the company wants to place restrictions, then they can foot the bill for all repairs.
I completely agree with you. This is a question of ownership. I personally think, whoever takes the true "ownership" of the item, is who should foot the bill for it to be repaired/replaced. I wonder if that's another way for Apple to consider this.
