What If the member legitimately forgot to provide the report, but the file Is clean and he/she Is Inactive only for a short period? We'd be removing links that're perfectly fine to begin with.
The link should be removed after 24 hours of not being validated, then the user should be notified. It can and should be how it works.
What good are rules when no one follows them?
  • Don't intentionally infect users
  • Hacking Another User [50%]
Should be 100% ban for intentionally violating these rules of conduct.

I trust @mothered and @Jiggly's judgement and generally we issue a permanent ban for any intentional violations. Some people repost/reshare, so I don't always treat every case the same.

Due to the nature of some of the files people upload, false positives exist and we recommend people exercise caution when executing files from any origin. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
I was never implying that the admins and mods have a responsibility to check everything uploaded, go through all files, it's not their job. Just use common sense.

We don't live In a perfect world, and never will.

Members tend to forget to provide online virus scan reports, but by no means Is that a conclusive Indication of malicious behavior, nor can It solely be used to judge the member's Intention. Penalties are served for violating the rules based on hard-core evidence, and not on opinions or hearsay.

As you can see (and as with other threads), I've requested a report be provided. If they neglect to do so whilst they're still active or another member deems the file malicious, the former will result In the link being removed and In the latter case, action will also be taken against the OP accordingly. Each and every contribution Is judged on a case-by-case basis.

It's as simple as that.

You're not In a position to judge an admin's/moderator's role, nor have the faintest Idea of what I personally go through countless times a day to ensure the safety of our community.

A portion of which, Is In fact checking every link/file from where the previous session left off.

Well I don't think that removing a link from a thread when it has no VT report, or even closing it, is a big penalty for any user; he just has to re-post a clean thread with a VT report (or edit if not closed).
I personally was not talking about any judgement or case-by-case statement, only about applying the rules. As it's clearly stated : "You must post a virus-scan for any files you upload or link to".

And again, your lax application of that rule makes them easy to bypass it (if you skids listen to this, have fun) : they only need to create new accounts every time, post a malicious link without VT scan and not connect back ever after.

EDIT: Plus it would make you your job way easier, no need to check those links without VT report Wink

It's not your place to speak on behalf of every member- that's unwise and Inappropriate.

I reiterate, each contribution Is taken on a case-by-case basis and judged according to the nature and context of the material provided by the OP. We've been effectively operating In this fashion for many years to date, and It continues to serve the board and Its members well.

I can't simplify It any better than that.

I didn't suggest anything of the sort.

I've already discussed this:

I was never implying that the admins and mods have a responsibility to check everything uploaded. Why does it have to be so hostile around here? I never said I was in any position. I literally said I'm not a mod but use common sense so I don't get a RAT. Nobody expects you to check every file with or without a VT scan. Your only responsibility is to remove those that violate rules, not go through with Ghidra and RE every single one. I'm on your side. That is, the side that has some level of knowledge.

I wasn't saying that you were. I was only clarifying that we do issue bans immediately in many cases.

No hostility. We're all interested in the same result.

Yeah that might be where we disagree. Not saying I personally speak on behalf of every member of course, but simply seeing the situation as it is: new members could make a tiny effort respecting the rules as they are. Specially for their first post!
With this in mind I guess our disagreement is just because we don't share the same interest for active and implicated users. Basically quality over quantity VS the opposite, but that's understandable.

Anyway, only removing a link while there is no VT report is, again, not a big penalty for anybody (and I can wisely speak for everybody saying that yes!). And if the member is never active again and thus post no VT, well I guess he wasn't that interested in sharing with the community

I rest my case, as you're saying it's been like this for years, I don't believe one second I could convince you to change this.. But I believe sharing this point of view is still important somewhat

(06-14-2021, 05:54 PM)vittring Wrote: Why does it have to be so hostile around here?
There's no hostility or animosity whatsoever.

As a community, we share opinions and communicate In an amicable manner. Whether they're right or wrong, Is Immaterial. The fact that we're making a joint effort to share our thoughts to better this board as a whole, speaks for Itself.

(06-14-2021, 05:54 PM)vittring Wrote: Your only responsibility is to remove those that violate rules, not go through with Ghidra and RE every single one.
As said, I do In fact go through every link from where my last session left off.

I'm active 4 times a day, so I know precisely what was posted and those that need to be addressed In a given time frame.

Appreciate It.

It's not about convincing me, but more to the fact that If a change Is warranted and well and truly justified, by all means It will be done In the Interest and safety of our community.

(06-14-2021, 08:40 PM)fritz Wrote: But I believe sharing this point of view is still important somewhat
Absolutely.

I appreciate your viewpoint and as per my previous posts, I've addressed each one accordingly.

There's nothing to thank the OP for, the link was removed 2 months ago.

As such, this thread serves no purpose.
