Asked my dad about this because he follows news in China very closely (mostly because hes married to a Chinese woman and he buys alot from Alibaba for our business) and turns out he drew his own conclusion from this.
He is in New York fucking hookers.
If this happens to be true (which there is a pretty good chance that it is) I truly wish him the best.

VPNs are basically compulsory, I'd imagine. It's very hard to access Chinese resources from outside the country, as most services require a Chinese phone number. Just getting into a Baidu Pan account is a pretty big nuisance. Are people typically arrested for using VPNs or visiting sites like ours?
From what I know, VPNs aren't illegal in most of china. They are discouraged but permitted by law. Exception applies in sensitive areas like xinjiang, but I am from guangdong, the "democratic" part of the country.
Yes, VPNs are compulsory for us, in fact, I don't recall meeting a <25 y/o that doesn't use a VPN.

That's pretty interesting. If they're not illegal, then what is the point of the censorship? You're not stopping anyone getting around the censorship, so why continue to do it? Perhaps you may be able to provide insight I don't have

I just heard about Jack Ma's dissapearance yesterday after I stumbled upon a video on Youtube. When I first watched the video his dissapearance sounded very much like the CCP was behind this, and possibly kidnapped him. But before posting this I found this article stating that Jack Ma actually went into hiding because of The Chinese Government's supposed crackdown on business in China.
