In such situations alcohol is not a problem. I think we are mainly going for the topic: "alcohol abuse", not "alcohol use".

OP seems to wanna totally rid alcohol, was just going from his title.

It's the peoples fault, not the item itself. That's like saying should Humans be allowed to go on the internet. The internet isn't a harmful thing, it's the people on it who chose to abuse it. There's nothing to be done honestly, drunks will be drunks.

RE: Should we ban alcohol? - Four - 05-15-2013

I don't think it should be banned due to a few reasons. The first reason is that alcohol can easily be brewed and bottled at home. If it was banned there would most likely be a "black market" for beer. This would result in "dealers" gaining money off of beer, rather than the taxes collected by the state. Since there would be no beer to attach taxes to, it would result in taxes rising on other items such as food and tobacco. Another reason is that it is a "good substance to have when you go out to eat with some friends" -quote from my dad, as I'm to young to legally drink. I also believe that there is just too much alcohol in circulation to just ban it. You will most likely make the argument that the supplies will dwindle down, but that would cause the problem of "addicts" spending way too much on alcohol. This would cause more debt and homeless living on the streets which is a huge problem in the world today. I can easily say that a banning of the substance will never work, though.

Assuming you're talking about banning in America.....:
  • It would be easily obtained from other countries around the world.
  • It would cause violence similar to drug cartels.
  • It would be at high prices and risky to buy.
  • If you got caught with it, you would be arrested for doing something that's practically harmless if consumed responsibly (similar to weed).
  • Job loss which would result in more debt and homeless.
Assuming you're talking about a worldwide ban.....:
  • Depressed and unhappy people
  • It would cause violence similar to drug cartels.
  • It would be at high prices and risky to buy.
  • If you got caught with it, you would be arrested for doing something that's practically harmless if consumed responsibly (similar to weed).
  • Job loss which would result in more debt and homeless.
(pretty much the same problems either way)

Also, if you are against weed I'm sure you may not like some effects. It may result in more people turning to weed to get depressing things out of their minds.

Wow awesome thread.

I will keep my opinion sweet and short.

No we should not ban alcohol. It's what people do with alcohol, not the substance itself that is really the problem. Although this reminds me of a joke:

"So what if Jesus turned water into wine...I turned a whole student loan into Vodka once. Your move Jesus..."

I'm fine with it being done in a closed envirorment with your buddy, but not cool with the abuse side. I for one have just drunk a few before and hung out with my closest buddies.

Anything can be a problem when abused.

Not necessarily. What about abusing knowledge by wanting to gain it? o.o

No, some people do drink alcohol with caution, then you get the odd one or two who abuse it.

Its a bit like saying "should we shut this forum down" because you get the odd one or two bad members/spammers/scammers

You can also abuse knowledge by using it to hurt others.

Would that really be abuse, though? I mean think of tactical war. The knowledge to plan out war more strategically than the enemy is not considered abuse because they thought their plan out more in-depth.
