To be honest you only need flux if you have an LCD monitor. If you have LED then you don't need flux.

+1 for f.lux. I have been using it for years, I have found that the default screen brightness and hue tend to keep me awake longer than I should be at night. I will manually turn it most nights as I do need to be asleep at some point.

Most people shouldn't NEED it. However, it is still very useful. Especially if you want the lighting to match the time of day.
