I'd say hiding it from guests is discouraging.
If they see a lot of interesting threads they want to talk in, they'll join.

Nope. Guests can leech but the benefits of them leeching is that they may join and/or backlink to us. Secondly, any really valuable content is usually contained within hidden forums guests cannot enter. If not, downloads/attachments are usually only for members.
