Also, Python is a good alternative ^^

VB.NET is a bad choice for a first language, in my opinion. If you plan on actually becoming a programmer, do not start with VB.NET. You'll inherit some terrible programming habits and on top of that VB.NET is literally designed to be easy, meaning that almost everything will be done for you. And as a programmer, I think it's better for you to learn how to be in control.

You should learn Java as Cyanide said before me. However, learning Java as a first language can sometimes prove to be a problem for most people. You may inherit some bad programming habits and you probably won't learn anything about memory management, program efficiency, etc. etc. as Java will do all of that for you. I'm not going to go in-depth, so if you'd like to know more you can research it.
However, if you ONLY want to make Android applications and games, then just go with Java. But later if you decide that you'd like to program in a language such as C, you may find difficulty adapting. I found this out the hard way.

PHP would probably be a good starter language as well.

Thanks for the post and its answers. I want to learn a language for Software* Development and all your post is helpful to me.

System Development? You mean like developing an actual computer system? Please clarify exactly what you mean and I may be able to assist you.

Oh, alright. Well if by chance WebDev interests you, I posted a good set of information on the first page. If you want information on software development (for the system rather than the web) you can PM me and I can try to help you out. I'd rather not continue spamming this particular thread.

That's true, though you get the habit of programming and writing without the frustration of not getting anywhere ^^
You are most certainly correct, though ^^

Software development is a huge field. Like, if I were to fill a hotel room with software developers, odds are good that none of them do the same thing.

Web applications?
Networking?
Databases?
Mobile applications?
Desktop applications?
Communications?
Cryptography?
Security?

User-interface?
Back-end?

Design?
Implementation?

Pick 1 from each category. And keep in mind that for simplicity's sake I omitted shittonnes of things.

Pretty good way to choosing, actually. What I want to know, is why you'd want a bunch of software engineers in your hotel room? Kinky. Tongue
