Online virus scanners are a mediocre form of analysis.
If It were to perform a memory acquisition and analyse the dump file thereafter for behaviour that's consistent with malicious activity, that's a different story.

Do not solely rely on a VM to protect you.
Certain types of malware, can circumvent It's hardware-assisted virtualization and Infect the Host (physical) machine.

Oh okay is it safer than using Sandboxie over like using a normal VM?

Run the VM on a dedicated Host (physical) system, solely used for testing purposes.
Install Sandboxie In the VM and execute all applications In that environment. On the physical machine, Install Deep Freeze, hence In the event malware circumvents the virtual environment, a reboot on the Host OS will go back to It's previous state prior to the Infection. Be sure to also keep copies of VHDs. If the VM gets Infected, mount the VHD within literally 10 seconds and you're up and running again.
