RE: Which distro do you prefer? - blackblaster - 06-29-2014 i mainly use Win 7 for gaming but when it comes to linux i use "Arch Linux" and "Crunchbang" and i also tried "Arch Bang" its great too. RE: Which distro do you prefer? - BORW3 - 07-09-2014 Shifted to linux mint xfce for about 2 weeks now. -Flows better than xubuntu or Lubuntu. -Has more UI editable items. -Absords very little RAM and CPU. RE: Which distro do you prefer? - b34x7 - 07-14-2014 I was using windows 7 a while back with backtrack 5 as dual boot but my little cousin brother deleted my whole partition and I was like -- " Are you fucking kidding me bro-a ? " I lost all of my data ! It was my mistake that I gave him my laptop to play games. well after this incident I'm using Kali linux as my main distro linux and it's really good for my work and also I've installed windows for some other use and testing. I'll be soon trying arch as I got heads up about it from you guys RE: Which distro do you prefer? - chmod - 07-15-2014 (07-14-2014, 06:57 PM)b34x7 Wrote: I was using windows 7 a while back with backtrack 5 as dual boot but my little cousin brother deleted my whole partition and I was like -- " Are you fucking kidding me bro-a ? You shouldn't use kali as a daily OS it's full of security holes and is really buggy (it's not designed to be a daily OS anyway) Arch is incredible but takes a lot of time and effort to get set up but once it is you will have a very stable and secure system (providing it's done right) If you are going to go down that road my advice to you would be to set aside a full day just to get the OS and basic system up and running and then plenty more time to get everything just right. You will most likely be better off heading over to the arch wiki which is a fantastic resource in general for anything arch. RE: Which distro do you prefer? - L0aD1nG - 07-15-2014 Debian is for sure one of the best choices... I prefer Debian nice and simple :epic: RE: Which distro do you prefer? - lady_godiva - 07-15-2014 (07-15-2014, 07:14 PM)Сава Вуковић Wrote: I would really have to disagree on Kali not being a good main OS. Kali is a good OS related to its purpose, but as @chmod said, it's buggy and has lot of security holes. Remember that it's quite new and surely better than the old Backtrack as Kali is based on Debian. Best OS in my opinion is Arch, i currently use it but i wouldn't recommend it as an OS to begin with. Once you know enough about Linux, i strongly recommend to give it a try RE: Which distro do you prefer? - chmod - 07-16-2014 (07-15-2014, 07:14 PM)Сава Вуковић Wrote: I would really have to disagree on Kali not being a good main OS. My source is that I'm not an idiot when you look at how the system is put together it's fairly obvious. You are correct kali is based off of Debian, which is a decent distribution. What makes kali unsuitable is what they did with the Debian system, the main account is root this in a daily OS is a really bad idea since anyone who gains access to your machine gains the ability to do whatever they want with it without any limitations. Furthermore any application you run on the machine has root privileges, including any malware you may come across (although very rare on a Linux platform they do still exist and require root access to do any harm) You may very well have set up a non privileged account and that's one step to securing it but there are other concerns such as ports that are opened by default to allow pen testing applications through (ssh, sql, Apache to name a few) all of these are unnecessary on a daily machine and allow a wide variety of attacks which otherwise wouldn't exist. Then there's the buggyness, not only does this make an unstable platform the very definition of exploit is Quote:An exploit is a piece of software, a chunk of data, or a sequence of commands that takes advantage of a bug, glitch or vulnerability in order to cause unintended or unanticipated behavior to occur on computer software, hardware, or something electronic. Now you could stop all these unnecessary services from startup and all the broken/buggy packages and be left with a fairly stable secure distro -Debian but then you might as well just install Debian and configure that for pentesting RE: Which distro do you prefer? - BORW3 - 07-20-2014 Kali tools on any debian release is the best way to go. I learned the hard way. Too many ports open on start up with kali, hences network administrators, hackers, anyone with knowledge can snooping ports. |
