Well actually there are TOR system-wide builds (at least for linux - for sure). That would be the best way to go in my oppinion.

Can't imagine how it would be system-wide, because DNS requests would not be affected as Tor doesnt support UDP.

The thing is DNS request are sent by the exit node in tor network (so, exit node resoves host for you).
