I use backticks very often In MySQL. A simplified example Is creating column names & table names using separate words. MySQL syntax does not allow this without the use of backticks.
For example (extremely basic):

CREATE TABLE `PC Parts` (`Part Numbers` INT(20) UNSIGNED AUTO_INCREMENT, `Hard Disks` CHAR(40) NOT NULL, `System Memory` VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`Part Numbers`));Everything In the backticks will not be possible without them.
