Hacker Jailed For Selling Customers' Data On Dark Web - mothered - 05-26-2018

Greetings everyone,

This clearly demonstrates the fact that the moment you establish an Internet connection, you're tracked/monitored to some degree- even on the dark web. Personally, I believe the punishment fits the magnitude of the hacker's crime.

Quote:A hacker who carried out attacks on a string of companies before selling customers’ data on the dark web has been jailed for more than 10 years.

Grant West, 26, carried out cyber-attacks on high street brands including Sainsbury’s, Asda, Uber, Argos and bookmakers Ladbrokes and Coral.

He obtained the email addresses of more than 160,000 people and sent them phishing scams masquerading as Just Eat to get their personal data.

West, who used the online identity “Courvoisier”, sold the information on the dark web, stashing his ill-gotten bitcoin profits in online caches.

He was sentenced to 10 years and eight months at Southwark crown court on Friday. The judge, Michael Gledhill, described West as “a one-man cybercrime wave” and said he had “secreted away” some of the £1.6m worth of cryptocurrency that is unaccounted for.

I'm actually not surprised, with all the drug busts and market shutdowns on the darkweb lately. I'm surprised people still think it's very private and secure

Interesting read. This is proof that things have changed over the past years.

A lot of potential buyers are In fact employed by law enforcement agencies- feds and the like.

The network may be secure (to a certain degree), but not necessarily whom you're dealing with.

Security is end to end dependency.

Quote:West’s two-and-a-half-year scam came to an end in September last year when he was arrested in a first-class train carriage in the act of accessing the dark web. He had been returning from a trip to visit his girlfriend and co-defendant, Rachael Brooks, in north Wales.
They control the access point, they are monitoring their network usage if any entity connect to tor network they get alerted.

Quote:The FBI didn't have a very hard time tracking down the Harvard University student who emailed a bomb threat around campus — he was using anonymous web browser Tor to hide his identity, but he accessed it using the university's wireless network
side note. using bridges is good, still.

Evidently, It's not too difficult to pinpoint when the access points (In this case Harvard and the email provider) to the Tor network are known to the entity Investigating the matter.

What concerns me is that I have been a customer to all of those with exception to the bookmakers. Those are HUGE companies in the UK. I sincerely hope companies see these events and start investing in better security. There may be no such thing as "completely secure", but don't make it easy for people.

Agree.

Going on personal experience, It's either the cost factor In why better security Is neglected, lack of knowledge or complacency.
