What is Coding to You? - DarkMuse - 07-02-2016

To me, coding is a hobby. Coding requires, practice, creativity, persistence, patience, and concentration. Coding has been around since the beginning of computers and has continued to grow and flourish in a variety of settings. There are infinite possibilities with such a powerful tool and it should be treated accordingly. Some may disagree, but I believe that all coding languages have a use. Each language has it's own unique style and function; however, languages are starting to unify and become cross compatible.

This may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your standpoint. For me, I believe it is both. It is a bad thing because I enjoy having to learn all the new quirks that come with a new language and unification kind of ruins the fun and causes lazy coding. An example would be array declaration being versatile in java to make C++ coders more comfortable. Personally, I think that it is an interesting idea in that it separates the newbies from the more experienced. It is also a good thing because it brings people from all coding backgrounds together to be able to work with one platform with ease and comfort. I do believe that unification and cross-compatibility should be used sparingly so as to preserve unique styles and functions.

Coding is an art. It can be elegant, functional, and creatively provocative. Good code shouldn't be difficult to read through and it should be written much like a book in terms of "flow." Coding makes the truth of problem solving concrete. There is almost never just one solution to a problem and through code we are able to analyze a problem in greater detail. Code is a unique type of art that can be combined with other variants to further improve solutions. You can take 20 different bits of code, weave them together, and get one amazing program.

What are your thoughts on coding? Why did you start and what do you most enjoy about coding? Do you have any favorite languages?

Coding to me is something that tells the computer what to do, as humans we speak in a language that helps us communicate to each other. I think of code in the same way, we type the code and tell it what to do and it does it.

Also im looking to start learning CSS and HTML and i'm pretty new to it all.

To me, coding is one skill that is really worth learning. A skill that can present to you many different career opportunities. Coding is an art, and learning how to code requires a lot of time and dedication. But in my opinion, everyone should learn how to program.

I couldn't agree with you more. It's an important skill to learn especially with the way things are going right now in relation to the job industry. Pretty soon, most jobs will be replaced with more efficient and cheaper labor however they will still need to be taught, maintained and improved. In addition, it's quite fun once you get into it and the more people that are coding and doing so "cleanly" the better software will become. Eventually. xD

I like the way you expressed coding in the OP. It's kind of like an artstyle. No one code project will be the same as another; In a way, it's self-expression. Everyone has different methodologies for solving problems, which is consequently reflected in their code.

There's problems I find which can be solved everyday. The way in which one solves those problems/if they solve the problems/how good the solution turns out to be is an intimidating challenge to boot. But it's like a hit of coke once you find the solution, and it gets addicting the more you do it.

TL;DR i'm probably going to need rehab
