and the text is no different than shit I was doing in photoshop/gimp a decade ago. And anyone that knows me will tell you my graphic skills blow monkey chunks even today. So imagine how crappy I was a decade ago.

Make it smaller (I find 100x300 a ideal size).
Also don't use or use bevel and emboss correctly.

Too big, Text looks really bad(+Bevel and emboss on the image) (Never, Ever use bevel emboss unless you know what you're doing it also almost never looks good on small text)
Try using a 150(height) by 500(width). With that try and use one with a background that probably looks better with the picture that you have right now so it doesn't look like it has weird cut off corners.

No offense, but I don't see anything good about it.
It seems like you wrote some text, slapped in a render and then just used bevel and emboss on everything to the max, and then put a glow around the render.
