Which distro do you prefer? - Deque - 11-18-2012

As the title says: What Linux distro do you prefer and why? Especially the reason is of interest for me.
In case you don't use Linux at all: Why do you think your OS is better suited for your tasks?

I myself have Arch and Windows 7 in dual boot.
Ubuntu is on my laptop.
Reasons: I first started using Arch because I wanted to be forced to learn more. Arch is pretty good with this, because you have to configure everything on you own. That is also the reason I keep it, it is now perfectly adjusted to my needs. I use Arch with xmonad (a tiling window manager written in Haskel).
Ubuntu is on my laptop because I rarely use it. Updating a rarely used Arch system is just a pain. I need something reliable here that I don't have to maintain that much and that just works for doing presentations and stuff.

I've been a big fan of Debian Sid for quite some time now. I am pretty used to it, it is pretty user-friendly but also allows you to configure anything you wish. My biggest reason for using Debian Sid is the packaging system, APT. Ubuntu has APT as well but the problem I have seen with Ubuntu is every six months or so a new version comes out and you must either "upgrade" to the new version, which in my experience has been very buggy, or install the new Ubuntu from scratch, which means you must back everything up. Debian Sid is always Debian Sid. You do not need to upgrade to a new version because Sid is always the latest version. Also considering that Sid is the experimental Debian I actually have had little to no (I can't even think of one) problems due to new, untested, buggy software. I've tried many different distros and even some of the *BSDs. Debian is my favorite.

You don't have to upgrade every sixth months. There is always a stable and long term supported version (LTS). A new LTS version is released every two years. You don't have to install Ubuntu from scratch when the new LTS is there.

Thanks for your input.

I tried Arch linux once and I like it since then. It was difficult to install it as am a beginner in linux but I still got it run with proper audio and desktop manager. Too bad I had to switch back to windows because I need to transfer files between my phone and my pc. However, I'm definitely going to install it again when I got a new pc.

I prefer Ubuntu because I have used Linux mint, lubuntu, kubuntu and bhodi and I found Ubuntu to be most stable.

I'm going to be different to everyone else Smile I use Fedora 16 as my daily OS and absolutely love it I used to use Ubuntu but hated Ubuntu 12 so after trying a few other distros settled on Fedora its fast stable and does everything I need I actually prefer it to any version of Ubuntu.

I prefer >>Back|Track 5r3, KDE environment. All programs are already installed, configured and optimized for the OS. Back|Track is best for me because I am currently learning Penetration Testing. I started with Ubuntu 10.04 a year and a half ago liked it and decided to progress to a more advanced Operating System.
