Which linux should I instal? - DaPaus - 11-28-2011

Note: I know this text is full of gramatical errors and other things I'm sorry about it, still learning

little bit info about the computer
So I'm going to get a used computer. It is about 4-6 years old. I will use generly for programming cause I don't want to screw my Laptop that is running Windows 7. It is a computer from the goverment tax office. Could I do something with it?

So my question to you is which linux should I instal?
- I'm linux beginner
- I want to learn costumise it
- Devlop some programs
- Meet the Open Source culture

Some other info
PC will be not connected with internet. (maybe USB wifi in the futher)

Ubuntu? no... I would say Linux Mint if you're a beginner, (which i'm assuming here if you're asking) otherwise Arch. Ubuntu is a bulky distro.

I would still recommend Linux Mint over Ubuntu though personally. Popular doesn't mean better, there's a whole bunch of them that are far better than Ubuntu, even though they are mostly all derivatives of the Ubuntu kernel, these derived distro's are also more improved in comparison to the resource consuming, bulky, Ubuntu itself.

I agree that Ubuntu is bulky. I haven't personally used Mint or any of the other Debian forks, but I have had Ubuntu run on some lower end hardware fine. If you're looking for a lightweight distro go with Slackware + fluxbox Biggrin

Slackware > * and Patrick > any other distro maintainer

I like Arch with AwesomeWM, Fluxbox isn't really for beginner Linux users though, and neither is Arch unfortunately. That's the only problem I could see with suggesting that to you (Dapaus)

Either Ubuntu or Linux mint.
I'm at Linux Mint aswel, i love it.

Will try linux mint

Had ubuntu like 3 months dual booted on my laptop (Yeah bad idea but I wanted to try linux). And I tought it was crap. But I wanted to give linux a second chance so.. Will try it as soon as I have my 'new' pc.
