[UK] Lib Dems will abolish jail sentences for drug possession - lux - 08-09-2014

The Mirror Wrote:Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has said his party will abolish jail sentences for drug possession if he wins the next election. Mr Clegg’s proposal would see prison sentences abolished in England and Wales even for possession of Class A drugs such as heroin and cocaine. The Lib Dems believe that people who use drugs should be treated for addiction rather than caged behind bars.

Nice. The news doesn't affect me directly as I live in the us, but I'm in favor of less harsh drug laws. At least in regards to possession and not production or dealing.

I don't get too into these types of things, but this is a very interesting story.

Very nice post.

If only this would happen in the U.S. It is painfully hard to find a job here after getting hit with a drug possesion charge after you are 18.

If we'd hold new elections every single week we actually might get some shit done...

Whilst I don't really like Clegg or the Lib Dems (Don't ask, don't want to derail this thread into a political debate) I do completely agree with this. I've always thought the drug laws were incredibly harsh.

I don't really have a strong opinion on this but I think that while the drug laws are harsh, abolishing all drug sentences is a little too far.

I hope this doesn't apply to manufacturers/distributors of higher class drugs (ie. heroin, meth, cocaine).

Agreed. There's too many people serving time for drug-related charges.

Whilst they state they'll abolish sentencing for possession of class A drugs (heroin, cocaine); I feel there needs to be a counter act for this. Possibly lowering the quantity of 'intent to supply' as drug dealers will find loophole to deal class A drugs 'legally'.

Well... As someone who really doesn't like drugs (that's impacted by where I come from and probably by never having done them) I think this is a bit too far. However, as someone who supports personal freedom and the importance of choice I am not extremely against it either - it's your choice if you want to ruin your life by being addicted to heroin.
