Ants - Oni - 04-13-2014 If anybody finds the average distance ants travel in their lifetime, I will give them all of my SP. Requiring legitimate sources. Can't you find it on google? EDIT: I can't find it to. Perhaps someone good at math can do it. I'm trying to solve it, but my laziness is getting to me. XD RE: Ants - Equinox - 04-13-2014 (04-13-2014, 10:06 AM)OversouL Wrote: Can't you find it on google? Speaking of Google, I just made a Python program that searches it with the amount of results you want. OT: Ants live an average life span of 45 - 60 days. Ants also travel at 1.09 KM / Day assuming it does NOT stop walking. 1.09 * 60 = 65.4 1.09 * 52.5 = 57.225 = Average (Thanks to Oversoul for pointing out my shitty error) Sources: - https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100117211336AAe3FbN (Ant distance) - http://lingolex.com/ants.htm (Ant lifespan) RE: Ants - OversouL - 04-13-2014 (04-13-2014, 10:27 AM)Duubz Wrote: Speaking of Google, I just made a Python program that searches it with the amount of results you want. It should be 1.09 * 60 = 65.4 KM also ants live an average lifespan of 45-60, so let's take the median which is 52.5 days 1.09 * 52.5 = 57.225 or (57.23 KM) RE: Ants - Equinox - 04-13-2014 (04-13-2014, 10:36 AM)OversouL Wrote: It should be You're right, since 1.09 is already the average per day. Doing what I did would be (1.09 * day) * day. >My bad >Will fix RE: Ants - Eclipse - 04-13-2014 After some research, I have discovered that this task is mostly futile, as ants are cold blooded, and their speed depends on the temperature of their surroundings. Also, ants are slow paced in day to day life, looking for food, but if faced with a hazard, they can move pretty fast. This also makes this task harder. So, we can resort to averages. The average ant walks 1 inch, or 2.54 cm every two seconds. Or, 1/2 inch/1.27cm every second. Since ants don't sleep, we can assume that they walk non-stop each day, looking for food. This means that they travel an average of 1.09km each day. The queen can live up to 30 years, and there are 10957.3 days in 30 years, but, the queen ant does not walk much, so we can rule her out. Male ants however only live for a few weeks, but they also don't travel, just mate with the queen. Worker ants are the ones we are talking about I presume. They live for around one to three years, an average of two years. There are 730.484 days in two years, walking at an average of 1.09km every day, means that worker ants travel an average of 796.22756km if they live for two years. Remember, this is an average and varies from species to species. Feel free to reply if you want any more information, such as for different average lifespans, etc. @Oni Sources: http://askville.amazon.com/ant-travel-24-hours/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=227038 https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100117211336AAe3FbN http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_long_do_ants_sleep?#slide=1 https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080622115830AA9Sedp http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_the_ants_jobs_in_an_ant_colony#slide=2 (04-13-2014, 10:27 AM)Duubz Wrote: Ants live an average life span of 60 days. What? No. The queen lives for 30 years, male ants live for a few weeks, and workers live from 1 to 3 years. Queens and males don't walk though, and just mate. Cut me some slack guys. ;-; RE: Ants - OversouL - 04-13-2014 Maybe it would help if Oni specified what kind of ant.
