An original iPhone sold at auction for $55,000. There's a growing collector's market for devices, consoles, and games from 10-20 years ago if you have them sealed.

The original iPhone was launched back in 2007 which took the industry by storm. It paved the way for smartphones that we use today and offered a plethora of front-facing novelties. Today, getting your hands on an original iPhone in its sealed condition is rare, and the ones we do find sell at auction for thousands of dollars. According to the latest, the iPhone from 2007 fetched a whopping $54,904 at an auction that comes in sealed packaging.

The original iPhone was unveiled on stage by the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs and the iconic moment is preserved in videos you can see on YouTube. The original iPhone was expensive compared to today's standards at $599. Apart from the price, the device featured a completely touch-based input system, opening the doors for the competition to follow. The original iPhone was auctioned by RR Auction by an ex-Apple employee who got his hands on the device when it launched almost 15 years ago.

A YouTuber recently bought one for $40,000 and did an unboxing. Their ad revenue/stats will easily cover the costs. Neat that it's being opened and not hoarded.

It's a collector's item or something people keep for prosperity. I don't think this thread is really related to Apple's own price politics. Though I agree that the prices of their current products are BS.

Around the pandemic, it seemed like the collector's market surged. Comics, cards, and other collectibles increased in price. A lot of collectibles are starting to return to pre-pandemic prices, but it was definitely an anomaly.

People aren't just grading old comics/cards, they're even grading video game consoles and old electronics. One would assume that collectible goods would be less valuable in dire times.
