Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has issued a passionate endorsement of the right-to-repair movement, despite the company's opposition.
The movement wants laws passed to guarantee users access to information and parts to repair their own devices.
"We wouldn't have had an Apple had I not grown up in a very open technology world," Mr Wozniak, its co-founder with Steve Jobs in the 1970s, said.
"It's time to recognise the right to repair more fully."Source
I can't imagine Apple changing their tune on this, but it's certainly interested to hear from Wozniak.

Steve Wozniak is based af. The right to repair has been fought for since Apple came around with Apple Care. They lost the fight to be legally able to prevent jailbreaks so they are trying hard now to prevent simple repairs on your own devices.

It frustrates me to no end. Surely this is a battle they simply won't win? In which case, why don't they put their efforts towards working on reshaping their business model so this can affect them more positively.

Allowing consumers to repair their devices would be great. However, forcing businesses to comply through the legal system, would be restrictive of their freedoms.

Given you've purchased It, you've taken ownership of the device, hence have every right to do whatever you please with It.

Equally, you could argue the company is restrictive of the consumers freedoms in a sense. The consumer is not free to do what they want with the product they've purchased. We're not asking them to do free repairs, but to allow users to have freedom.
I can see it from both sides, though.

I actually watched this video last night, and I wasn't expecting it to be as amazing as it was. I never knew Wozniak was such a staunch supporter of right-to-repair.
No matter how you see it, selling your product to a consumer, and then not allowing the consumer to maintenance their product that they now own, is outlandish.

To me, the fact that right-to-repair isn't common place is just WEIRD. Like, why do I have to go give you money to fix this when I know how to do it myself/can do it myself?

It's no different to purchasing a laptop, but I cannot replace a faulty SSD or Ram. Why take It In for repair, when I can do It myself on a device that I paid for and rightfully own.

In terms of a cell phone, I've purchased It and It's registered under my name when connected to a given carrier, hence I'm responsible for both the device and Its usage. Essentially, I own It and If I wish to repair It and not take It to an authorized dealer, then that's entirely my choice. If the company wants to place restrictions, then they can foot the bill for all repairs.
