Are Forums Dying? - Accident Man - 06-15-2021 Forums are too 20th century-ish now, not only because of Reddit and Discord, but withal the incrementing utilization of other social media services like Facebook. Essentially those who care about being a “community” rather use Discord and/or Facebook groups now, and those who would like to enjoy the sense of having a constant forum-like atmosphere go for Reddit. There are still many well-established forums that are liable to be around for at least a few more years, but the incipient ones expeditiously lose the battle against Discord and Facebook, and in my opinion, all the forum-like content will ineluctably be moved to Reddit. Technological amendments are quite exponential, especially these years, so the entire social media may turn to a graveyard in a decennium. Only time will show. RE: Are Forums Dying? - Jiggly - 06-15-2021 I'm sure I would have maybe believed this myself years ago, but I've heard this exact talk for 7 or so years, and forums are still strong. I definitely think there's a reduction in forums that start up and survive those early years. However, as long as owners are still interested, the well established ones still appear to serve a gap in the market. There's a lot of people who hate reddit and social media, and probably wouldn't go near them with a barge pole. Those are the members that will use forums for years to come I'd bet. RE: Are Forums Dying? - Oni - 06-15-2021 People are more likely to go for apps like Discord/Telegram off the bat. Forums are definitely less common now, but they still have their place. The averages from June 2019 are roughly the same, actually. We've gotten about 120,000 posts and 60,000 members since then. There are definitely day-to-day fluctuations, but for our particular board, I don't think we're seeing real movement away from the site. I think it really depends on what you use a forum is for. RE: Are Forums Dying? - fritz - 06-15-2021 Yeah I don't think forums are gonna die, it's still something that can't be replaced with any modern social network imo. Some fb groups can be used as forums kinda, but for real discussions about subjects more in depth, more private, or not respecting fb rules for example, we will "always" need forums I think. Although we can imagine forums can still evolve! It already evolved a lot for the last 15 years, with all those points and stuff
RE: Are Forums Dying? - mothered - 06-16-2021 Boards are still well and truly alive as they were over a decade ago. Without naming specifics, there are many boards with an extreme amount of activity on a consistent basis. Personally, I'd prefer our community over the garbage that social media has to offer, particularly Facebook. RE: Are Forums Dying? - kazome222 - 07-26-2021 I think there will always be a place for forums. discord is mainly used for live chats and if you don't happen to be at the live event you kinda just miss it. forums allows people to come share information at their own pace and you can always come back to it. |
