Is 3D Pinted Meat Vegan? - Jiggly - 03-14-2020

There is an increasing number of vegans in the world, and at the same time, an increasing number of people concerned with climate change. One way to combat the effects of climate change is to reduce the amount of meat we eat. The environment impact of breeding animals, particularly beef, is more significant than producing plants.

However, lab-produced meat has been investigated for a number of years. Scientists are also looking into producing meat via 3D printing.

I wondered, if meat is produced without killing any animals, or having to breed animals, would this classify as "vegan-meat"? Veganism is often driven either by the desire to not hurt animals, or to reduce climate change. What do you think?

Fair point. What classifies as meat?

What classifies as meat?

Anything that derives from the flesh of an animal/mammal.

In theory, it does derive from the flesh. As it's created directly from flesh cells. In that sense, you could say yes.

Excellent point.

I actually never looked at It from that perspective.

Good one.

You always manage to put a smile on my face.

I see there is more and more interest in 3D printed food. It is expected this market to grow substantially over the next decade (or two)

Probably it can be called vegan meat if no animals or birds are involved or harmed in the making of the byproduct with the help of 3D. At the same time I do not think we will have people accepting 3D meat any time soon.
