I think religion is what controls us in this life. What I mean is, there are so many things (mostly bad) that we can do if not for the limit and commands imposed by our religions.

Another thing is that our various religions kind of unites us at our place of worship. Thereby, knowing more people and being friends with them. Because honestly, as for me who is always busy with work, the only time I get to make new friends is if I meet someone new in my office, on a business trip, or at a religious place
