The only time MAC really matters is layer two. Once a packet leaves a network, the mac changes. In a common network setup (Port Address Translation, or NAT Overloading) the router replaces the mac address of the origin and destination fields, as well as the fields for IP.

However, if someone were inside your network, having your mac could be more of an issue. They could preform whats known as ARP Poisoning. ARP or Address Resolution Protocol is used to associate a Layer II (MAC) Address with a Layer III (IP) address. ARP Poisoning is when and attacker changes the associated mac address of a target machine by sending forged ARP replies. In many networks, devices with accept ARP replies even if one was not requested. However, this method requires physical access to a network.
