In my opinion, layer masks are some of the most important tools in image editing. below is a quick tut on how they are used.
1. get your images.
What's usually done is getting the same pic with different filters, as below.
2. put them in your editor (duh)
put the pics in your editor with the filtered one on top
3. add the mask
add the layer mask to the filtered image. It'll look like it got deleted but it's still there.
4. fill the mask
use your brush tool to fill the mask so the filter shows
5. erase the parts you want to show.
use your eraser as a brush and take away the parts of the picture you want colored. DONE!
(it's a bit of a botched job but, hey)
(Eye and hair were both colored)
