You Might Be At A Higher Risk Of Mental Illness #1
The stereotype of a tortured genius may have a basis in reality after a new study found that people with higher IQs are more at risk of developing mental illness. A team of U.S. researchers surveyed 3,715 members of American Mensa with an IQ higher than 130. An "average IQ score" or "normal IQ score" can be defined as a score between 85 and 115. The team asked the Mensa members to report whether they had been diagnoses with mental illnesses, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). They were also asked to report mood and anxiety disorders, or whether the suspected they suffered from any mental illnesses that had yet to be diagnosed, as well as physiological diseases, like food allergies and asthma. After comparing this with the statistical national average for each illness they found that those in the Mensa community had considerably higher rates of varying disorders. While 10 per cent of the general population were diagnosed with anxiety disorder, that rose to 20 percent among the Mensa community, according to the study which published in the Science Direct journal.

In my views, mental Illness (diagnosing & treatment) Is still In It's experimental stage, hence the thread's title "You Might Be At A Higher Risk Of Mental Illness".

Some day, a definitive form of Identifying and treating the Illness may come around. Interesting reading though.
Thanks.

I have an iq of 138, and a non severe form of depression, but I doubt that should really be considered a mental illness

I have an IQ of 75 and my mental health has never not been perfect.

I am highly paranoid but I don't believe it's too do with my IQ I believe it's just the way I was born, cautious but highly paranoid I over think about everything sometimes until it stresses me out to the point everything spills into one pot and over the sides.

Or as the old folks would say I'm just crazy.

I was thinking the same, especially in the case of bipolar disorder.

Not always the case, but Bipolar Disorder can be complex to treat effectively.

I have a couple of friends who have It, and It took quite a while (for one friend) to find the right dosage and the actual medication to keep the disorder under control. The other friend stopped his meds abruptly and the ramifications were not pleasant.

I have always had severe depression, but over the years developed a coping mechanism (I am a goof IRL). It wasn't until I spent time behind bars that I became a bit more unraveled mentally(always worried about who is out to get you, be it cops, criminals, government, etc), but it kind of goes with the territory. I do have a fairly high IQ(I was in Mensa), but I do not consider myself a smart person in any way, shape or form.
