Windows KB5003173 Update Won't Install If You've Removed Microsoft Edge #1
I myself just encountered this error when I was trying to install a recent patch for Windows 10, KB5003173. The update would download and "install" while Windows was running, but after a restart, the message "We couldn't complete the changes, Undoing changes" would appear. Thankfully it only took me a few minutes of research to get to the root of the problem. And without fail, Microsoft still continues to amuse me. The update fails if the user has uninstalled Microsft Edge in the past. You can do so by using a Third-Party uninstaller, or a script like Windows10Debloater.

The fix for this is quite simple though. All you need to do is navigate to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\' and delete the 'Edge' folder. For some reason, uninstalling Edge causes this update to fail. I really don't understand why the update can't just overwrite the folder itself, but whatever.

After the update completed, Edge has been fully reinstalled, again, and pinned to my taskbar, again. I am begging you, please just use Linux. I don't care if you use Ubuntu, LFS, or something inbetween. Anything is better than Windows 10.

I’ve been having this issue and just didn’t have any interest in fixing it because it didn’t bother me that much.

Knowing the cause though, I don’t have to track it down myself, so I may just temporarily reinstall edge to alleviate it and just get it over with.

Useful post.

This is precisely why I cautioned another user about removing windows components on another thread. So many reddit and forum posts about broken updates because of debloat tools.

Microsoft tried forcing Windows updates garbage on my system, by setting the Windows Update service to manual and actively running. They even grayed out every option to disable It.

This Is my response to It.

I edited permissions and force-removed every protected system file pertaining to Windows updates. Good luck MS with trying to touch my system again.

No surprise by me with the history of Microsoft. However it would be nice if they just outright said "Edge is required for this update" or even "An Incomplete Microsoft Edge installation may cause this to fail" because I'm sure they know.

Windows will continue to dominate the market for years but if these things annoy you, all the reason to switch. Beyond school work and gaming, I've almost completely made the switch. Its a nice world when you take the jump.

I use Windows solely for editing and gaming. Other than that, I try to keep everything else on my Gentoo install.

Yeah except for gaming (even if some games are more compatible it's still often a headache, and much lower fps rate), most people could use mainly Linux nowadays, the transition might be slow but steady who knows. I already converted lots of my non-geek friends to Linux Mint

We both share the same opinion.

I've been on the Windows platform since the good old days of the 16-bit Windows 3.1, and Microsoft hasn't changed one bit.
