Quote:It's really shit that sometimes Microsoft don't even care about updates and just send them and you need to update and they just like brick your computer. I saw a YouTuber that got his Lenovo Yoga something, installed Windows Updates, boom PC dead.

That is not a isolated case, these have happen to me a lot when i was using Windows XP a few years back. Every now and then i had to reinstall windows on a regular basis. To be certain that it was all clear i just switched the plug connector in CMOS and hit on/off button and switched the plug connector back. But back then i had a official cd that install from scratch erasing the hard disk and install windows (15 to 20 minutes).

The point Is, why should you have to resort to formatting your system due to a legit Windows update?

It's ridiculous to say the least.

If you are not in a network where infection can happen directly from machine to machine, (nowadays we use routers which can be the entry point to the home network) the recommendation that i say is install a antivirus, firewall and a flexible parental control tool. Keep them updated to the latest release and just keep your fingers cross in not falling for a wardriving hack.

Theres a half dozen different vectors for malware than just the internet. Removable storeage being a major one. Bluetooth is easily exploitable and something often overlooked as well. Theres also compromised devices, such as IoT, backdoors, and exploits that would allow infection. Those updates often contain critical security updates to patch known exploits or bugs. You should not disable them unless you have very good reason to.

Again, a parental control tool with "unrated sites" active will block any connection even if the machine gets successfully exploited. This can block successfully TOR as well as any exe that tries to call home. The malicious payload is blocked from accessing the internet which require a memory hack if possible to give access to the net and give away the control of the machine.

Note: This is only a major issue in case of ransomware which will lock your files when the executable is executed in the machine.

Responding to your comment that is what the most effective vector i will say browser exploits.
Removable disks isn't a issue as autorun.inf or similar are blocked on Windows 10 by default.

Here is a pack of all the best Exploit Kits...
