Used VLC for years but recently switched to PotPlayer (also FREE) when VLC couldn't play a growing chunk of my lossless (high bitrate) media. I now prefer PotPlayer over VLC as it plays everything I throw at it and is not as bloated as VLC is.

Another media player worthy of noting, Is KMPlayer.

It supports UHD, 4K, 3D and Is available as a freeware download.
