There was a very particular style of DDOS attack just now, it was mitigated.

Registering

Spoiler:
Spoiler:
As you can see in the picture above you must first "login" to Freenode in order to register, you see this form of logging in is only temporary. However once you register that name will be permanent as the name you have on hackcommunity.com itself.

Spoiler:
As you can see here there's a command you must use to register, to Freenode
Code:
/msg NickServ REGISTER password youremail@example.com
Where it says password you would put a strong and secure password of yours, and where it says youremail@example.com you put either your most used email or a throw away (that you can still retrieve email from.)

Spoiler:

Spoiler:
The circled bit of IRC command, is your registration command to which you must but into the IRC chat itself, each user gets their own unique command so don't use that one!

Spoiler:

Spoiler:
Here's an example just copy and paste your command into the chat bar and hit enter and voila registered!

Spoiler:
This is the message you will get if you did everything correctly.

Logging in

Spoiler:

Spoiler:
As you can see to login you must use a command,
Code:
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY account password
or
Code:
/ns identify password
Where you see account you would put your username you chose for the IRC. And password of course the password you made for the IRC. And on /ns it's the same way just use the password you used for signing up where it says password.

Cloaking

Spoiler:
Now to get a "cloak" in irc you must go to Freenode
Then under server use
Code:
#freenode
But first be sure you're logged in using either
Code:
/ns identify <password>
Or
Code:
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY account password
Then you look at the names on the far ride of the screen and when you see some one with a + by their name example +username then that means they are staff to message them type either,
Code:
/msg username
Or
Code:
/query username
But remember these are staff that make no dime, so BE NICE! For example when messaging ask "Hello I'm (insert name) I was wondering if you could please put a cloak on my account? And when they do so thank them!
But now your name should be cloaked and all should be well! This is only useful for moderators though.

Final Thoughts

Spoiler:
Here are a few links to help you learn the commands of IRC and one on an awesome client to use instead of webchat. FreenodeFaq IRChelp
IRCclient
AnotherIRCclient
IrcCommands
Lastly for mods needing to auto OP some one (basically a mod of the webchat) use this command,
Code:
/msg chanserv flags #hackcommunity.com username +oO

That is all folks, thank you very much for reading!

Special thanks to @mls577 for providing some links!

A very special thanks to @Linuxephus™ for editing out my IP from the pictures. Biggrin

A simple, direct, and to the point explanation.
Plus the additional work of having to click each spoiler.
I Yike It!:epic:

Maybe a quick addition for how Staff Members can Auth. themselves in as Operators.

It doesn't make any difference what client you use, however the UI of xchat is very nice.

P.S. Thread stickied so users have easier access to learn about the IRC.

Nice tutorial.Straight and Simple..
Since most Irc Server Commands are universal here is a lil something some of you might find useful...

Click for Nickserv Commands!

http://www.wyldryde.org/commands/

99% of these should work on freenode..
