This story isn't necessarily known worldwide, but this is something that really hits close to home. The reason being is that the girl who died attends my university, and is in a neighboring residence. This morning my residence a fire drill, and the buildings were evacuated. I'm not sure if her residence had the same. On our way back in, at around 9am, the girl was struck directly by lightning and fell unconscious. At arrival to the hospital, she was pronounced dead. So far, our whole university has been showing a bunch of support, plus a bunch of universities in our province have been sending their condolences. This is hopefully a reminder to be careful, guys.
"A first-year engineering student at the University of Waterloo has died after being struck by lightning while walking on campus Friday morning.
It happened at about 9 a.m. on a pathway leading from Ring Road to Student Village 1, an area of student residences, according to a university press release.
The student was found without vital signs and taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead, Waterloo Regional Police said in a news release. Police were in the process of notifying family in Markham, Ont.
'We’re not aware that it was involving any specific activities on campus. It would appear to have been a very tragic accident,' said Nick Manning, spokesperson for the university. 'We’ll be making sure that students are aware that they should take precautions in extreme weather and take shelter whenever they hear or see thunder.'
The university cancelled all Friday’s events on campus including Orientation week events for first-year students. Classes are set to begin on Monday. A Twitter account called Waterloo Orientation reminded students to stay indoors until the storm passes.
The Ministry of Labour has been contacted and the Coroner’s office is also looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident, police said."
