Tutorial in Heroes of Newerth- "Beginners Utopia" #1
Maraaye's Guide- "Beginners Utopia".

Today I will be teaching you how to become a better player on the game Heroes of Newerth (HoN). Offical website

(There will be some spelling mistakes, because in Australia we spell some words different)

Well in this post I will be covering
  • Types of heroes
  • Hero selection
  • What to buy
  • Laning
  • Creep killing
  • Pushing and ganking. Whens the right time?
  • Where can I get experience to be a good player

*During this thread I will be expecting you to know a little bit about HoN and the physics of the game.*

Types of heroes
Now there are so many things heroes are used for. But all the heroes are different types, for eg. Soul Stealer a good hero for many things, but he is mainly a late game *Carry* hero.
Okay so i'll give you a list of hero types.
  • Initiator
  • Nuker
  • Carry
  • Disabler
  • Supporter
Sub-roles:
  • Tank
  • Babysitter
  • Ganker
Im not going into detail because it will take forever, but you can visit this
link as he goes into a lot of detail in that section.

Remember choose wisely on which hero to pick.

Hero Selection
Now this is one of the most biggest issues with players, they all want to get the Damage per second (DPS) heroes, but you need to even out your hero types for eg. just say you were doing an activity with a group of people and it involved your brains, physical strength, and some light weight running. And if someone picked a group of just physical strength to do everything, where does the brains come in to initiate the job?(Bad example I know)

I hope I made that clear, this is very very very important part of the match.
Okay so you need to communicate with your team mates during hero selection, tossing arround ideas with each other, asking them what they will be going. So if there is already a full carry hero, you are not going to need another one, So maybe try going a dis-abler/carry eg. Puppet master. You will need an initiator in every game, plus a good stunner, and some nukers.

So you need a little bit of everything, that is what makes a perfect cake right?
You cant just have icing and no flour, eggs, milk. See put all those together bake them in the oven and wa la you have a good hero selection.

-The cake part I got that idea from Nigma

What to buy
Well for every hero there are so much things you can buy to enhance your ability to get tower, creep and hero kills. And you usually buy items to counter your enemy for eg, if you are vs'ing an electrician you might wanna grab a null stone after getting your damage enhancer items. And remember there are so many ways to play a hero don't be affraid to buy things that you wouldn't normally buy.

But I suggest buying things in the recommended section of the shop.
Also in every game someone buy wards of site, and a courier. *this is a must* because it saves valuable exp gaining time, if that makes sense.

Also put the wards where it matters, for eg, on the ramp of your neut creeps entry this give a big advantage to see who is coming where and when!

My 5v5 build, (This is if someone has a courier)
You do not have to use this build but I like to.
Okay well you are aiming to get boots asap but, someone has a courier so we will but that off for a little bit. I buy (for an AGI character)
One HP pot
Two mana pots
One duck boots
One Crown
Two Minor totoms

And that is a good build to start with, here is a
screan shot of it.

Laning
Laning is also an important part of the game, because if you put two melee heroes together against a Melee and a range most likely you will fall back and not get much exp. Also Solo'ers have to be a key factor in your strategy. Most of the time Middle lane will solo but that isn't always the case, and people who think that a int character has to mid, wrong. Stereotypically people think that a int goes mid, but that isn't the case because a carry hero or a ganker, should go mid so they can get farmed and level up quicker and lead your team to victory. I'm not going to go into much detail into this but, call MISS When the hero in your lane has gone from your sight.

Creep killing

Key factor in your way to farming, I constantly see people auto attacking, not a good way to get last hit. By last hitting the creep and killing it rewards you with bonus gold. If you auto attack your chance decreases on getting that extra gold that you really really need.

Also denying to give the enemy that little less exp and gold that they could of gotten.
Make sure you are a hardcore denier whilst getting creep kills it is pretty hard, and on top of that you have another hero harassing you. Pretty hard huh. Well there are some ways you can over come this.
For eg. try running arround near your creeps so that it is hard for the opponent to cast a spell on you.
I have made a vid of me denying and last hitting if you want to give it a look. That is what you should be doing.
But please note I was level 25 on Practice mode, because it was taking a while to last hit because you are so weak early game and I just wanted to give a brief outline on what to do.

Pushing and ganking. Whens the right time?
A lot of people ask what time is the best time to gank and push? Well the best times are really any time for ganking but be mindful that if you are bot and going to top, not a good idea. It should be only mid going for ganks in the early game so when mid goes bot or top, if one of the enemy heroes are missing a bonus 3vs1 whilst when its 3v2 you will most likely win but could still die. So choose the right times to gank and weigh it up in your mind.

Pushing now there is no need to get killed for this. Also think logically about what might happen if you are alone and everyone else on the map is missing? And you are attacking their tower, I would back asap! Also the right time to push a lane is when there is other people all over the map, and you have just killed someone in that lane 1/2 preferably. And thus giving you the upper hand you can push but be careful!

Where can I get experience to be a good player
NO EASY MODE!
For god sakes don't play EM, its nothing special, its to imbalanced and too easy!
Also find rooms with your psr/kd rating or a bit above, thus giving you a challenge. And try not just playing All Pick, but mix it up, Single Draft and All Random, this will give you experience with all heroes not just the one you like. This will give you a good upper hand when you start to become a bit better, because you will be able to play more efficiently then for eg a EM player, you will be a lot better then them even if they have been playing longer then you.

Remember what I have tought you this is the advanced basics, I will continue to make threads about HoN, even if no one plays it. Tongue Because people will come that play HoN. Hehe.

Well I hope I helped you gain a better idea about HoN, and how to play it, also check out
http://www.youtube.com/user/HoNLeague it has many great tut's have fun.

Just an old tutorial I found on my computer, enjoy. ^___^ * This is written by me, so if you want to reuse this please give credits. Smile*
