I think is the same method as kmsguides. Windows check the kms server alive every 2 months or 6 months depending of the version. Just in case ther server is offline whent windows try to chek it, the product enter in a kind of days countdown and then give you a message of activation. If in that time the server become online or you change the server the produc will reactivate.
Is just an online key validation.
In this case, they use a script (ospp.vbs) but you can use just CMD commands to do it, also they use his own server (:kms8.msguides.com) but you can make your own in a local kms (127.0.0.1), or in your local net (official or unofficial), or use an online (microsoft or not). I will made a post of that.

My Windows 10 OS Is KMS-activated and when the server (or my PC) Is offline for a long duration, a message Is displayed either requesting activation, or advising It's about to expire.
