Troops Withdrawing from Afghanistan by 9/11 #1
The number of troops was already being decreased, but it looks like the US will be withdrawing from Afghanistan. It's been 20 years since the 9/11 attacks.

Quote:President Biden will withdraw all American troops from Afghanistan over the coming months, U.S. officials said, completing the military exit by the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that drew the United States into its longest war.

The decision, which Biden is expected to announce Wednesday, will keep thousands of U.S. forces in the country beyond the May 1 exit deadline that the Trump administration negotiated last year with the Taliban, according to a senior administration official who briefed reporters Tuesday under rules of anonymity set by the White House.

While the Taliban has promised to renew attacks on U.S. and NATO personnel if foreign troops are not out by the deadline — and said in a statement it would not continue to participate in “any conference” about Afghanistan’s future until all “foreign forces” have departed — it is not clear whether the militants will follow through with the earlier threats given Biden’s plan for a phased withdrawal between now and September. The Taliban has conducted sputtering talks with the Afghan government, begun under the Trump deal, since last fall. It was also invited to
an additional high-level inter-Afghan discussion in Turkey later this month.

Damn thats 1 thing I guess Biden did well.

But on a serious note im really happy to hear about this. Hopefully all is well and we can work out a peace deal with all of the middle east eventually. One can dream, that would be awesome.

Its about time they pulled out.

I can not imagine things will be great over there straight away after they leave but Afghanistan never will be like the U.S.

I don't think that was ever the aim? Isn't there great risk of more internal fighting and death expected when the American's leave?

I'm sure in the long-run, things will balance out.. or just continue in internal wars. I don't really see this as either good news or bad. I just know it means America and it's allies won't be able to offer their help to anyone regardless of what happens now. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

Some people believe America and their forward operating bases all over the world are a threat and that this is a good sign of taking things a step back. Most people in Afghanistan including U.S troops and the locals feel that they shouldnt be there and that its an invasion, I dont have strong feelings either way I just know that many American lives and locals lives will be saved by pulling out Wink

From what I've read to-date, I don't think it's entirely true that local lives will be saved, due to larger risks and less protection from the Taliban. But I'm sure many feel that the US (and by default, my own nations military) should not have been there in the first place. I also know others feel that the lives lost there, will be in vain when all forces leave. I can see all the arguments for and against to be fair.

Same here I can see both pros and cons, it all depends which group/country you are more concerned about but I cant ever see there being peace in one country when another country is stuck in the middle of it. A bit blunt I know but truths are rarely savoury xD

I think it's true. I also suspect they may not find peace there in my lifetime, given the nature of the disputes.

Finally. I and many others have wanted this for years. I want our troops to stop dying in the sand for a lost cause. We need to move on.

It is unfortunate development but then it had to happen one day. No use prolonging it. But as the world have seen, soon after the US troops withdrawal, the situation is back to square one. Taliban is taking control in many areas and introducing their outdated and barbaric laws. So I really wonder whether the presence of US troops for all these years did any good.
