What is it?

Tower of Heaven (also known as "Tengoku no Tou") is a indie platforming game made in 2009 by askiisoft. It's a traditional, yet not-so-traditional platformer where your goal is to reach the top of a titanic tower against the whims of the resident god of the place. While relatively short (you could probably beat it in about an hour if you tried), it is notable due to its open-interpretation story, its hard-yet-manageable difficulty, its monochrome greenish color scheme as a callback to GameBoy style-games, and its catchy, amazingly melodic-yet-simple 8-bit style music that will stick with you for quite a while.

What do you do?

The goal is simple enough: you play as an unnamed humanoid, drawn to the tower after hearing of the riches it promises upon reaching the top. Your progress is impeded by the god of the tower, who wants nothing more than you to give up and leave. To this end, he enacts laws that you must obey if you wish to ascend, or risk being smited. The player has unlimited lives, so the only real danger is just starting over at the beginning of the level. While the laws start out relatively simple enough, they start to become more and more complicated and complex as the god becomes more agitated with your progress, which will require you to think outside the box of traditional platformer games.

Where can I download it?

You can download, and play, the game on the official website. Alternatively, you can play it on Newgrounds with extra features and an additional ending.

Final notes

Don't forget to find the secrets to unlock an alternate ending for the game! In addition, the developers created a sequel and spiritual successor to the game called Pause Ahead, which can be found here.
