Thoughts on Temple OS and/or Zenith OS? #1
Over the last few months I've been playing more and more with Zenith OS, a fork of the late Terry Davis' Temple OS. It's not trying to be some Linux killer or anything, but I do find it quite interesting as a research OS.

I was curious if anyone else had tried either before and if so, what their thought on it were? I find there's a lot to dislike for sure, but some really interesting concepts in there. For example, the concept of the entire OS essentially being built around a single programming language that's also the shell. It's like having a TTY in unix taken to a whole new level because all code, kernel included, are just there to edit, hook, and call. Really playing with it challenges the concept you have of programs. Why can't this piece of code call that piece of code it needs without having a huge stack of junk in the way? Or how you can just hyperlink anything. You can link from a code sample in a comment block to the code you mean or link images and even 3D models directly into documentation and they get rendered right there. It's just supported by the OS.

I've only really taken the time to install TempleOS on a Virtual Machine but never really messed around with it all too much. From what I've seen and heard it seems that he achieved more than most Software Engineers ever do. He clearly was an intelligent guy and won the genetic lottery in terms of IQ, but at the same time he also lost that lottery by having genes that caused him to develop Schizophrenia :/

RIP Terry, I remember learning about hes death, I told my colleagues all about him lol.

I've also heard about Zenith and it apparently being developed more "professionally".
I saw it a while ago and it made a good impression on me, but honestly, I think TempleOS will always be way more iconic, regardless of how good of a project it becomes.

I get the mixed feelings. My hope for Zenith is that it sort of becomes like 9Front has to Plan 9. Mostly sticking to his original vision but polishing the parts that need it, porting some stuff, and adding broader hardware support. It's super early though so we'll have to see.
