I feel that my schooling experience was very similar to Lux (we both live in a particular region in England).
A friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer. The house (a bit like Hogwarts houses for those that don't have them in their schools) had a meeting to talk about it. They released the news and explained the girl and her family's wishes about how they wanted people to continue as normal around her to make her life easier, and those around her. They also offered for people to come and talk to them if they needed support. She was a good friend to me and the news was shocking. I was very grateful that the school arranged the meeting.
However, there are some instances when such a thing is not appropriate. In another school (when I was around 9 years old) it was discovered that one of the teachers was a paedo. As we were young they did not disclose the information to us directly (some kids wouldn't even know what that was) so they wrote letters to the parents with strict advice that we weren't allowed to read them without our parents permission. They left it to the parents to decide the best way of telling their kids.
All of these incidents occurred internally. Any events that happened to partnership schools or other schools in the community were not disclosed to us through our school. I think this is the right thing. They do not have a right to comment on something that they are not involved in. If anything should be made common knowledge to the community, it should be through news or it should be up to those involved to get in contact if it is more personal.
I am sorry to hear that it has upset you. I understand your feelings. If teachers are mistreating students or not acting as they should, do you usually make complaints to the higher ups? We were able to do this in all of my schools.
Sorry for the essay guys... Congrats for getting through it to those that took the time to read my response O.o

School was the best place. You'd just get everything handed to you. After school, you would get put into the real world where you'd have to pay for things with your own money. Sometimes you'd have to choose between eating dinner or being able to pay for gas to get to work the next day. I see a lot of kids saying that they don't know what to do after high school. Just join the army.
