In my views, they both serve a similar objective- with the only difference being a different form of appreciation.

In terms of the name Itself, I prefer the latter being "Like".

I like the thanks button. It is more like an achievement than a the like button would be. Some of the people (including me) spammed the like button pretty often. Maybe now it will have more value.
