Tech Support Horror Stories! 11-05-2016, 08:35 AM

In college, I had another student bring me his laptop asking if it was possible for me to do data recovery. I asked him what was wrong with the unit. He explained that the machine had fallen out of his car. I had assumed he had meant that he had left it on top, and simply drove away. Later that day I removed the machine from the bag. I was a greeted with a horrific sight I had never seen before and have never seen since. The right-most corner of the palm-rest was missing. Gone. As if the cookie monster had mistaken the poor laptop for a shiny, silver cookie. The next day I managed to find this guy in the hall and further inquired to the circumstances of the laptops untimely demise. His story was the greatest work of fiction of the 21st century to date: "I was late for class, and was speeding with my BMW with the windows open, and the laptop was in its bag in the back seat. I took a sharp corner, and the strap of the laptop caught my armrest, and flung the laptop out the front window." Yes, the "client's" excuse is that he was speeding and his laptop flew out his window. From the back seat. I simply accepted the bizarre explanation, and moved along with salvaging what I could. (curiously, other than the large chunk missing and some scratches, the laptop was intact, including the hard drive) Before returning the data to the client, I asked a mutual friend about my this guy in an off hand conversation, and was told by my friend that this guy is known to have a nasty temper. My final assessment is that he got frustrated, and possibly took a hammer to it or threw it at a wall with force. I happily returned the data to him, and charged him various extra "fees" as I dislike being lied to.
