[Suggestion] Increased text amount for signatures #1
Hey!
I was trying to post in Announcments/Suggestions but I can't Sad
Anyway, while changing my signature to have my information such as GitHub, YouTube, Steam, etc, etc. I was stopped since I reached the character limit.
My request is either:
1) URL's don't count towards character count on signature
2) Signatures are expanded for people who have donated

I'd back this, but I understand why they're capped at 255. It's a database architecture problem. The VARCHAR sql type hold strings from 0-255 characters, and the next step up is the TEXT type which holds up to 65,535. I'd be all for longer signatures, but that's a lot of unused space, and I don't want people writing a novel under their posts Tongue
It's often the outcasts, the iconoclasts ... those who have the least to lose because they
don't have much in the first place, who feel the new currents and ride them the farthest.

Yes, however can you not slap a limit from TEXT type in MySQL?
I'm not huge into PHP however if I recall, you can set a limit < numLimit
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not sure, but even if you could, it would reflect the VARCHAR behavior in that a VARCHAR(8) in a VARCHAR(255) column still takes up 256 bytes (the last one is the null terminator).

Two images for sake of example.
I mean, yeah, it takes a wee bit more space however it doesn't reflect anything since MyBB compensates for it.

Not a bad idea, but like Inori said this could cause problems with the database or add a lot of unused disk space to the DB. It would be nice if something could be implemented that URL's don't count (which is mostly the major part of the characters).

You can always shorten your URL's though @"ProffessorChill". If you use something like http://www.gg.gg to shorten your url's that saves some extra characters as well.

Agree.

In fact for MySQL versions below 5.0.3, the VARCHAR data type holds a maximum of 255 characters. 5.0.3+ can contain 65,535. The CHAR data type Is capped at 255 (fixed length). Then you have the MEDIUMTEXT and LONGTEXT that hold In the millions and billions respectively. The BLOB (Binary Objects) have similar character lengths to their respective string/text data types.

All of which when configured correctly, can be very effective Indeed.

Thank you for correcting my misunderstanding of this. I am too used to using VARCHAR on MySQL 5.0.3+ or just out right using NoSQL.
Sorry if I caused any havoc with this request.

You're truly welcome.

There's quite a few data types In MySQL, a lot of which may seem similar to one another, but perform a slightly different purpose depending on the version of MySQL Itself and how It's Implemented Into the database. I neglected to mention that my post was based on the InnoDB Storage Engine- which allows usability of transactions (example using the SQL ROLLBACK Statement), constraints and Foreign keys.

Please do not apologize. You have not caused any Inconvenience whatsoever. It's an absolute pleasure to have you as part of this community and to assist you In any way possible.

If I were you, I would just make a photo, like mine, and most people, and just add a link to the photo that maybe goes to a ghostbin or pastebin with the contents you want to put there. Maybe in the photo say something like "Click me for more info" or something. Think I might just do that.. I gave myself a pretty good idea tbh lol.
