Just a heads up I tried to leave out as much spoilers for this game as possible because I feel like it ruins the game if you know everything that happens before you play.

Plot

Silent Hill 2 starts off where James Sunderland, the main protagonist in this game, is in a bathroom outside the town Silent Hill looking in a mirror. He starts talking about his wife, Mary, he implies that she is dead. Once you leave the bathroom a cutscene starts up where James is reading a letter from his dead wife, it essentially tells him to come to Silent Hill where he will find her in their "special place".

The letter
Spoiler:
In my restless dreams,
I see that town.
Silent Hill.
You promised you'd take me
there again someday.
But you never did.

Well I'm alone there now...
In our 'special place'...
Waiting for you.

The game itself

Silent Hill 2 is probably one of my favourite games in the series, also the first one I've played. Once of the things that makes this game stand out from the others is how different the otherworld is. Instead of there being blood everywhere, rusted pipes etc. it's more of a depressing scenery than anything, lots of emptiness and dark blues. Water makes an appearance in some of the otherworld which seems to represent James drowning in the sorrow and regret he had with his situation with Mary.

Like most Silent Hill games I've played the difficulty level, even when I first went through the game was a little bit too easy than I'd liked it to be. Granted I was just playing on normal, but still, I should have gotten some trouble. The riddle difficulty however was very decent, I had to pull up a strategy guide multiple times. Sometimes for a riddle like the hanging criminals or actually finding all the pieces for the actual riddle like in Toluca Lake prison where you had to find all the tablets. One thing that I liked about the game which lot of people probably disagree with me is the running around Silent Hill. I feel like it built a lot of suspense making your way to Silent Hill and Gathering the supplies to get the Historical Society key, it just makes the game that much scarier. The controls are like most survival horror game's, up moves forward, left and right turns and back moves back. I'm used to these controls because I've had some history with survival horror games previous to me playing this game so it wasn't a big deal.

All in all this is a beautiful, well made game and deserves a 8/10 in my opinion.
