RE: Preview - Gladiator management game #11
@"noize":
I tried on Windows 7 now and got these issues:
The framerate jumped to 800 fps which is way too much. (with Linux I always get 60-65 fps)
The lags after dropping items on the character appeared too.
The game took a long time to start.

I updated to the newest lwjgl version, but it didn't change anything.
I will see if limiting the framerate helps or if I can fix it in any other way.

It is indeed the framerate. The only machine that I currently have access to running Linux is a 10 years old computer running Ubuntu 12.04. It doesn't have Java installed, so I couldn't test it on any *nix machine, but on Windows 7 the framerate stepped up way too high (aroung 800 for most of the time). It took long times to restart the fight each time, often freezing in the mid as well till it froze the machine for at least half an hour, even after I killed the respective process (which was taking away more than 4 GBs of RAM, while the CPU wasn't abused).

I think limiting the framerate might be a solution, I would suggest something like 220 as a maximum FPS rate.

I updated the download link to: http://uppit.com/ocixxk4qil17/Gladiator.zip
I turned on VSync so the framerate should be in a reasonable range now. Tell me if it still causes problems.

I made another update. First I used the targetFrameRate option. Second I set a limit to the logic updates of the game, so even if the framerate is high, it shouldn't use up the CPU that much. (The default option sets one logic update per frame)

Other than that I fixed the issue that choosing similar items won't move them back to the inventory and I added some new items.

I made a very small download for you (240KB). I hope you still have the old folder. There just replace the gladiator.jar and the sprites folder from the download here:

When it gets stable, arrived to the inventory screen, it's using around the 10% of the CPU, and circa 400,000 KBs of RAM, which is actually fine, I mean, it is surely expensive, but definitely bearable. 121 FPS for the most.

It froze for some time before getting to the fight. The enemy looks like dead, he's not moving at all and my moves look more awkward than before (not the frontside one (when it faces me), but the other stepping, when it then stops, it looks like on one feet(?)). I can get behind the adversary (talking about background depth, I mean behind his back, i.e. closer to the background than he is) but not go over (just behind is back, not any longer ahead), and I can't kill him (he's already dead(-like), after all, I don't think zombies could die). Let me restart the game and try once more.

Second try: took less to get to the fight, but same results.

Third try: just like the other two times, it froze before getting to fight, some more than it took in the second try. All moves look more awkward than before. It's not taking the sword back after launching the attack, on loading the enemy looks like... well, I'd say this is not the solution to the freezing problem (still freezing - anyhow, just less than before).

Does it show any of these symptoms on *nix?
