So, there's a new-ish anime out called Kemono Friends wherein a bunch of zoo animals got turned into, surprise, anime girls by a magic substance. Given this and the fact that Japan is fucking weird, some Japanese zoos have started putting cutouts of the characters in their enclosures. This is how Twitter's new favorite animal, Grape-kun the Humboldt penguin, met his new waifu Hululu, an anthropomorphic version of the same species.

It's cute and kind of sad, but it gets a little worrying when it was discovered that Grape-kun was spending so much time with the cutout that he was missing feedings, which could to malnutrition. The zoo decided it would be best for everyone's favorite otaku penguin if he was separated from the cutout for a while, so they're spending some time apart. And yes, there's lots of fan art.
