Overwatch's Symmetra Confirmed Autistic #1

Recently an autistic Overwatch fan reached out to Blizzard, to ask about Symmetra. Blizzard confirmed that the theories of Symmetra's autism were, in fact, true. It shouldn't come as a surprise, as Overwatch tends to have a very diverse cast - with Tracer recently being confirmed as lesbian.

Quote:“It’s very astute of you to notice that she mentioned the spectrum in our comic,” Kaplan wrote, referring to an official Overwatch comic from last May. “Symmetra is autistic. She is one of our most beloved heroes and we think she does a great job of representing just how awesome someone with autism can be.”

Blizzard later told Polygon that both the letter and Kaplan’s note about Symmetra were accurate. This validates a theory that has percolated in the Overwatch player community since last May, when the game came out and Symmetra’s backstory began to be filled out.

In “A Better World,” the Symmetra-focused comic that inspired the fan letter to Kaplan, Symmetra describes herself as always being seen as “different.”

“Asking where I fit on the spectrum,” she continues. “It used to bother me. Because I knew it was true. It doesn’t bother me anymore. Because I can do things nobody else can do.”

You're a little late to the party, I'm afraid. The Polygon article was published in back in March, and I think even that was a few days after Blizzard's confirmation.
It's often the outcasts, the iconoclasts ... those who have the least to lose because they
don't have much in the first place, who feel the new currents and ride them the farthest.

Not exactly as though they had to confirm. Like Tracer's haircut, Symmetra's comments regarding a "spectrum" are kind of a giveaway.

Funnily, the first article I read was published just a few days ago: https://www.wired.com/story/the-sleeper-...deo-games/

I had no idea there's all this background to the characters. I mean, I haven't played and just watched people play. Still, it makes it all the more interesting.

In which case, I'm definitely late to the party.

The lore in Overwatch is insane. It rivals that of League of Legends with about a fifth of the characters.

Oh wow. I had no freaking clue. That explains a lot about the immense fangirling over particular characters. I kinda want the game but, lack of disposable income + not a great machine = no go.

Shit they just announced this?
The wiki said she had been autistic for a while.

She does not really seem autistic to me.
But then again I guess I'm not 100% certain how to diagnose autism.
