Ohio Will Give $1M Each to 5 Vaccinated People #1
Ohio is giving away $1 million and a scholarship each, to five people that are vaccinated - over five weeks. Might entice people that are otherwise against the prospects of getting it.

Quote:Signing up for Ohio's vaccine lottery is fairly straightforward – submit your name, address and the site you got your COVID-19 vaccine.

Participants are asked to agree to let state officials verify their vaccination status and agree to the official rules.

Those rules include several details that weren't previously announced, including who is eligible to win and how prizes will be taxed.

Ohio will give away $1 million and one college scholarship to a vaccinated Ohio every Wednesday for five weeks in a row starting May 26. About 1 million people had signed up for the drawing as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

They could have done a smaller prize pool with more winners. I feel like a lot of people get that "eh, the chances of winning are so slim I won't bother", but when there's a lot more prizes available.... Not so much xD

Still, it's interesting but a little odd to be offering a lottery ticket for vaccines. They must have bad vaccine rates or something.

They could give a million people $5 instead, I guess. No matter how you cut the pie, it's going to be underwhelming. Ethically this is odd, because you're offering money as an incentive for what is a medical procedure.

A lot of people play the lottery and the chance of winning the jackpot among 332 million US citizens, Is one In 302 million.

When you do the math, the odds are significantly better with the vaccine lottery. Though, seldom does anyone calculate the odds In this fashion.

I honestly feel that would be more effective. Not that I'm saying that's the best way to entice someone to get a vaccine.

I know what you mean. Although, if you were to compare the number of people who buy lottery tickets and those who don't... Well. There's a lot who don't lol. I suppose this lottery is an incentive, so the perception of your chances is more important than the actual calculations, right?

Probably more than what both you and I Initially expected.

Absolutely, and all the more reason why people will be enticed to get vaccinated.

A chance at winning the lottery, no matter how small, Is better than no chance at all. Moreover, It's not as though anyone's paying for the ticket. That being said, I strongly agree with your Idea (over what's mentioned above) as per below.

Do you know what, I actually spent a little time researching national lottery participation in the UK, and was absolutely staggered by what I found. Although none of the lotto-based websites I found statistics on had direct links to any study/sources, they consistently quoted a number of approximately 70% of the UKs population for participation. Personally, of my social groups and family, I definitively know of only one person who has bought a national lottery ticket, as most of my family don't bother. However, I also read, that my age group had one of the lowest participation rates, which could be what swayed my perception.

So, I think you might be right. It's probably more of an incentive than I initially guessed! Although I didn't research the equivalent data for the US, I suspect it would be not dissimilar given the cultural similarities in our nations.

that is exactly why I will not be getting this vaccine. Why is this so heavily pushed with prizes and incentives? Very odd.
